Some of this was solved just by continuing to try and building the confidence that if I attacked from top and failed, I could chain into a front headlock and attack again. I knew the entry from top half guard (the Rafaconda), but I would rarely finish when entering from top, and I was afraid to lose top position on a submission attempt which was low percentage for me.

The anaconda is most usually taught from a front headlock, which was a position I rarely found myself in while rolling. The answer is that the anaconda pairs with the choke that Danaher calls the "seated kata gatame" (also sometimes called a "shoulder in guillotine"). I couldn't initially identify which arm triangle would naturally pair with the anaconda. Understanding these pairings helped me to chain attacks and create combinations. Firstly, I noticed early on that arm triangle variations come in "natural pairs." Specifically, the kata gatame side choke pairs with the nogi arm-in Ezekiel choke (taught by Seph Smith here) and the D'arce pairs with the arm-in north south choke (taugh by Gustavo Gasperin here). There were also a number of strategic issues. I find that the lock over the throat gives me a cleaner choke, and I find that walking to finish results in me being less able to maintain strong posture and finish by engaging by back and hips. Other instructors, including Lachlan, teach to elevate the hips and rowing with the choking arm to finish (Danaher call's this the "rotational" finish).Īs incredible as Rafa Mendes is, I've had more success performing the submission as it has been taught in Danaher's ETS: Front Headlock and Giles' High Percentage Chokes: No Gi. Some instructors, including Rafa teach to walk towards your partner's hips and attempt to trap a leg. The second mechanical point I found difficult was the method of finishing. Others such as Lachlan Giles teach to place the lock over the throat. Some instructors, such as Rafa Mendes teach to place the lock as deep as possible, with the wrist of the choking arm going into the armpit. The first mechanical point that I found confusing was the placement of the figure-four lock. I found the anaconda to be the most difficult arm triangle variation to learn, both mechanically and strategically.
